This year the Marathon starts for the second time in Ukraine. During three weeks the participants of the rally will cross 10 European countries, visit 23 cities and towns and, finally, cover a distance of over 3,000 kilometres.
The participants of the rally were welcomed by the Head of Lviv City Council Andriy Sadovyy:
“Electric vehicles are our future, – he stressed. – The world values energy efficiency. It is important for us to show to Ukraine and the whole world that we not only have to adopt all that is good in our world, but we also have to propose new things. Here in Lviv we suggest the new vision of economic and eco-friendly transport for the whole country. There are many citizens of Lviv who use electric cars. Our city goes hand in hand with modern trends, and we are followed by the whole Ukraine”.
Mr Sadovyy also presented the new public transport – the new generation tram and the electric bus produced by the Lviv enterprise Elektron, both of the vehicles symbolically joined the Marathon as the symbol of new technological developments in Ukraine.
Except for that, during the official start ceremony there were announced the results of an artistic contest for children Electric Car of Future. Five winners, children from 5 to 12, were given presents by Juri Tamm, President of Electric Marathon, and Honorary Consul of Monaco in Estonia.
“I can see today that the start gathered a lot of young people, – he said. – It’s a good sign. After several years this exact children and teenagers will show themselves that an electric car is no longer a transport of future, but of the present. Every month the number of electric cars and charging stations in Ukraine grows, while attention to the environment and willing to minimise the dangerous pollutants are two of Europe’s most significant values. Without a doubt I can say that Ukraine will come to Europe on an electric car”.
During the start there was also presented the prototype of the first electric car that was fully designed and assembled in Ukraine – Synchronous. Designed as an exclusive taxi, looking as an old carriage and full of modern equipment inside, it attracted significant public interest. Synchronous also started on Ploshcha Rynok – during the next weeks it will beshown to the inhabitants of dozens European cities and towns. This car was produced by the company Electric Marathon International, its CEO Andriy Bilyy is also the co-founder and Vice-President of the Electric Marathon.
“Electric Marathon is one of the events that united Europe, – said Mr Bilyy. – The participants of the Marathon originate from several European countries, as environmental protection and transfer to “green” transport is the issue that the whole Europe tries to solve. Therefore I am proud that our citizens are equal in their attempts to solve this issue. Electric Marathon is a friendly hand that passes through Europe and covers the distance of 3,000 kilometres”.
Traditionally, the electric bicycles and quads started first. Among the cars the attention was attracted by plug-in hybrid sport car BMW i8, as well as Tesla Model S that crossed the start line without a driver, using autopilot only.
In the evening the participants of the rally crossed the state border of Ukraine and reached Rzeszow and took their rest. Next day the Marathon will reach Wieliczka and Brno.
